ROSSIKA

Educational Methodology Center for Russian Language and Literature

98 Malookhtinsky Prospect
St. Petersburg, Russia

E-mail: rusyaz@rshu.ru

History

In 1962 the Russian Meteorological Institute founded a department of Russian language for foreign students. This is one of the oldest departments of Russian lan-guage for foreign students in St. Petersburg. From its first day the department has provided instruction in the Russian language to foreign students, graduate students and interns studying in various departments of the University. In addition, the department prepares foreign graduates for studies in any Russian institute, through its year-long course in Russian language and general education required for admission to these institutes.

In 1991 a new educational methodology center ROSSIKA branched out from this department. The main goal of the Center is organizing short-term courses of Russian language study for foreigners. Over time the Center has drawn students from Austria, America, Germany, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and South Korea. The Center maintains ties with San Francisco State University, whose students study at the Institute.

Faculty

Rossika consists of fourteen highly qualified faculty. In addition to University training, all have at least ten years of experience working with foreign students, and have taught in foreign universities. There are four PhD graduates among them.

Location

The center for Russian language and literature “Rossika” is located in the head-quarters of the Russian Hydrometeorological Institute in the center of the city on the banks of the Neva, near the metro station Novocherkasskaya.

Courses

All our courses are available at any time throughout the year.

Intensive Program:

This program provides students of different levels of Russian with intensive instruction — 20—30 academic hours (50 minutes) per week.

Because students have a relatively short time to take advantage of the language milieu, the program maximizes the active use of the language though excursions, self-directed tours of the city, encounters with its life and citizens, all aspects of contemporary life in St. Petersburg. We especially recommend staying with a Russian family for those taking intensive courses.

Instruction covers various aspects of the language, with chief emphasis on the spoken language with its colloquialisms, as well as information pertaining to Russian culture and its people, with heavy emphasis on grammar. Work in the spoken language includes the etiquette of everyday contact. The material can be modified and expanded according to the needs and desires of the student(See fee schedule).
