BFU Cruise 1998In July and August 1998 the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) organized and carried out the research cruise of the Baltic Floating University (BFU). It consisted of two stages — 1) onboard the research vessel and 2) onboard the sailing catamaran.1) International Training through Research & Children Cruise aboard Russian hydrographical research vessel «Sibiryakov» was held on July, 22 — August, 27. It was considered as a contribution to the 1998 International Year of the Ocean (IYO’98). The scientific teem (28 persons) consisted of teachers, scientists and students of RSHU (17 persons, including 8 students, one of which was WMO student from Cameroon), teachers and students from Klaipeda University (Lithuania) and Cadiz University (Spain) (3 persons correspondingly), students from Newcastle University (UK) — 2 persons, Berlin Humbold University (Germany) and Helsinki University (Finland) — 1 persons correspondingly. Participation of schoolchildren 17—19 years from different European countries is the main feature of this Cruise dedicated to IYO'98. 25 schoolchildren from: France (5 persons), Russia (4 persons), Portugal (3 persons), Finland (2 persons), Germany (2 persons), UK (2 persons), the Netherlands (2 persons), Greece (2 persons), Lithuania (1 person), Georgia (1 persons) and Turkey (1 person) -took part in the Cruise. The interdisciplinary expedition has been carried out in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea and East-North Atlantic. Under supervision of the specialists students have taken direct part in taking the samples, have worked in onboard laboratories, getting the experience and practical skills in methods and technique of the marine research, they also have taken part in processing and preliminary analysis of the data. The programme of the Summer BFU'98 cruise included also the participation in different activities in frames of the IYO'98 and organising aboard HRV «Sibiryakov» of the exhibition concerning BFU activities, including Training through research & Children Cruise devoted to IYO'98. The ports of call were Helsinki (July 23—24), Boulogne-sur-Mer (August 3—4), Lisbon (August 9—11) and Boulogne-sur-Mer (August 15—16). During the calls, Deputy of the Executive Secretary of IOC and international co-ordinator of IYO'98, persons from local administrations of Helsinki, Boulogne-sur-Mer and EXPO'98, representatives of Russian Embassies in the Finland, France and Portugal have visited HRV «Sibiryakov». 2) The cruise of the sailing catamaran CENTAURUS-II has been conducted on July 18—31, 1998 within the framework of IOC/UNESCO «Baltic Floating University» Facility being performed by the RSHU. The research cruise of Centaurus-II was conducted in coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Finland — in Luga-Koporye region. The main objective of the cruise was the complex study of the state of the marine ecosystem on the basis of hydrophysical, hydrochemical, hydrobiological characteristics, including the data on sediments state and the level of their pollution and also the level of pollution of the water environment.
